Blogging is cool.

Hey there!

Welcome to my blog.

I know what you’re thinking: I’m a bit late to the party. It’s 2017, and only now I’ve started blogging?

In my defence, I’ve been writing notes for years, I’ve just rarely published them.

Why bother writing?

Up until now, I’ve kept rigourous notes on pretty much everything technical that I’ve come across. There are three main reasons for this:

  1. It helps to cement the knowledge in my brain.
  2. It gives me a searchable record for future use (in case step 1 above doesn’t work).
  3. It helps me to identify - and resolve - any gaps in my knowledge.

Why bother blogging?

Historically, these notes have just been a bunch of text files on a disk somewhere.

The reasons I’ve decided to start publishing these things to a blog are:

  1. Others may actually find them useful.
  2. Putting anything in the public domain naturally encourages you to improve the quality of it (and also gives the opportunity for peer review), and good notes are better than bad notes.
  3. There seems to be a worrying trend towards “shallow thought”, whereby any of us can just tweet small bits of nano-information (“FACT!”) without having to actually back it up with some form of reasoned argument. Writing detailed articles on things, rather than short tweets, forces you into a state of deeper thought, and therefore seems like a good antedote to this trend.

So, without further ado, here’s my blog.

Enjoy!
